BRICS countries discuss new and renewable energy sources and energy efficiency

On 14-15 October, the BRICS Working Group on New and Renewable Sources of Energy and Energy Efficiency held a videoconference at the National Research University Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI) with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

The meeting was attended by over 40 top officials and leading energy experts, who focused on ways to promote energy efficiency and the possibility of transition to renewable energy sources. They also discussed the design, construction and operation experience of renewable energy facilities and associated utility infrastructure.

The participants were updated on the interim results of projects to create new cooling systems for high power LEDs for enhanced reliability and lifetime and the possible use of platinum as an essential element of the integrated process for efficient energy conversion.

These projects are being implemented within the BRICS STI Framework Programme, under which the signatory countries’ financial establishments agreed to create a consortium of scientific, technological and innovation (STI) projects. The programme also stipulates a procedure for holding and funding joint competitions in which at least three applicants from each BRICS country should participate per project.
