BRICS Competition Authorities discuss competition issues in automobile markets

On 5 ̵ 6 November, the BRICS Working Group for Research on Competition Issues in the Automobile Markets met via videoconference.

The Working Group meeting was attended by the representatives of all BRICS countries, who spoke about competition in the automobile markets in their countries. Anastasia Dokukina, Deputy Head of the Division for Antimonopoly Supervision of Foreign Economic Activity of the Department for International Economic Cooperation, and Nikita Filippov, Head of the Engineering Division of the Department for Industry Control, represented Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS Russia).

The participants also reviewed the progress in preparing the BRICS Competition Authorities Report on the automobile industry. The report will provide a comparative analysis of the general characteristics of the automobile markets of the BRICS countries, as well as look at specific competition issues on the BRICS automobile markets as a whole and separately, and offer possible solutions to the identified problems.

The Competition Authorities of India and South Africa, which are Co-chairs of the Working Group, presented the first draft of the report, prepared with solid contributions from all BRICS Competition Authorities. Following the discussion, it was decided to expand the range of issues under consideration, including the regulation of the passenger transportation market and taxi services. The final version of the Report will be presented at the 7th BRICS Competition Conference to be held in 2021 in Chengdu, China.
